I’m gonna be a bit controversial here. Well, a tiny bit. I just saw a quote on Facebook that really inspired my thought process about television, and I’d like to share it with you.
“Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye.”-Bill Hicks
Now, I know he’s making a joke. But really? C’mon. It is quite fashionable among thinking people and others on a journey of self realization to badmouth TV. I get it. Many, many folks out there just sit in front of the boob tube, not caring much about what comes on, taking it all in, and believing a good portion of it. Plus, the images, music, movement all go into our subconscious. It’s powerful stuff.
But spray paint to your third eye? (The third eye being the seat of our intuition.) Maybe. When used as above. When allowed to be brainswashed by television without thinking. But, here was my response to this quote:
“You know, I don’t watch much TV. Just not drawn to it. But I’m not sure dismissing it as a whole is really necessary. There are a number of examples of TV doing a lot of good.
I think the real issue is that people tend to blindly accept what is offered and take it as TRUTH instead of forming their own opinions.
What if, instead, we made conscious choices about we watch and thought about what came before our eyes. That could be a very good practice, indeed, in my opinion.”
Television is just like any other tool. It’s a TOOL. The important thing is how we CHOOSE to use it. WE still have the power so long as we stay CONSCIOUS and make our own choices. So, if you enjoy travel shows (as the guy who posted the quote admitted after my response), enjoy them! If you like The Office, or Dancing with the Stars, or Phineas and Ferb, go for it. Relish it. Have fun. Laugh. Cry. Be entertained. Just keep your consciousness turned on and your 3rd eye will be quite safe. I’m sure of it. And again, it’s great practice to keep our consciousness turned on for “real life”.
Tell me what you think in the comments! I’d love to hear from you.
