Simple, but Powerful Technique: Ho’oponopono

I like my spirituality to be ultimately practical. That’s why I love the law of attraction so much. It works. Using it, you can get whatever you set your mind to, literally. I see it work all the time. The technique I want to share today is related to the law of attraction (what isn’t, right?).

This one is an ancient Hawaiian technique called Ho’oponopono that Joe Vitale writes about in his book ZERO LIMITS with master Ho’oponopono teacher Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len. I’ve been sharing it with friends and family a lot lately and have been seeing amazing results. Like, really fast, amazing results in normally difficult situations.

The basic idea behind the technique is that we are all ultimately 100% responsible for EVERYTHING that comes into our energy field (AKA, our lives). Got that? 100%. EVERYTHING. If it’s in there, you brought it. (Very law of attraction.) Now, taking that into account, what you wanna do is make sure that everything that’s in your life is something you want. If you’re not liking what you see, Ho’oponopono recommends that you “clean” it.

How do you clean something you don’t like? Huh?

There is a simple meditation that you use to send good energy to whomever or whatever you would like to improve or “clean”.

1. Bring the subject into your mind.
2. Repeat these key phrases:

I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you

Repeat them as long as you wish. You are clearing your energy field. You are taking responsibility. You are apologizing to yourself for creating this situation. You are changing it. If you can’t remember them all, or if nothing feels “dirty” to you, simply repeat “I love you” in your mind to anything and everything in your path. (Joe Vitale does that a lot. He seems to be doing alright.)

Watch your life transform for the better.

It’s that simple.

If you’ve used Ho’oponopono before, feel free to share your story in the comments. We’d love to hear it.

I have not heard of this use of Ho’onoponopono although I have used it in this way… kind of a combination of this and my Qi Gong that I do daily.

I have studied with some Hawaiian teachers and know a little about Huna and ancient Hawaiian spirituality. I am joining a Hulau soon and one of my massage techniques is Lomi Lomi, a Hawaiian style of massage.

My understanding is that it is ideal to physically touch the person when asking them for forgiveness.

Traditionally, this was a ritual/ceremony where all of the involved family members came together and choose an impartial elder to be the moderator. Each side stated their case, their side of the story. The moderator stated his/her decision about the matter. Then the parties embraced, apologized, asked each other for forgiveness (regardless of who was wrong), expressing gratitude and love. Then they all Lomi’d each other and ate! Sounds like a party, eh?

The end of the ritual is that the matter is to be released and never discussed again. For me that is the most important part of Ho’onoponopono: the release.

I’m sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you… In doing these things, I release this issue and its hold on me… and I am lighter for it.

Speaking of issues, I was involved in a triangle of sorts and it was not possible for me to touch the third person. Therefore, I asked my friend that I was able to touch to hold the other person in his mind while he held an object that belonged to her. I touched him and channeled what I needed to say to her then asked her for forgiveness through him.

I would like to say it worked but the results were temporary at best. I continue to practice what I know to release the energies connected to this situation and use forgiveness as part of a daily ritual.

Wow. Thanks for sharing that Diane. It made my hair stand up on end. Powerful stuff. Cool. I’m sure that in a lot of situations, the touching just wouldn’t work. Certainly in the recent situation where we used it, touching would not be possible. But if it is…awesome. Sounds like deep healing.

I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love my memories. Calm yourself. Peace.

  4. Terri says:

Well, hello there, old friend. Memories are good.

  5. Stephany says:

WOW, this is powerful. Both in business and in your love life. I’ve heard and used this before, but now I’m going to share this with my e-dating audience. I can’t think of anything more powerful to release the bonds of past relationship and clear your consciousness for new possibilities. As we all know, being straight spiritually is a moment to moment practice to address feelings as they arise. What I love about this is anyone can use it in any moment.

    Cheers to you!

    Stephany

  6. Terri says:

    Hey Stephany!

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks so much for sharing the post with your Peeps. I totally agree with what you say. A friend of mine is having miraculous occurrences with her ex husband after practicing Ho’oponopono.

And yep…moment to moment. I love the simplicity of this. It is easy to do in the moment to moments. :) But there is so much depth, too. It’s beautiful.

I love this technique. I use it while listening to help me stay focused on the person that is speaking instead of worrying about what I might say next or other tangents in my head.
I also love having something instantly available to replace the thoughts I don’t want to give a home to in my head. Being able to instantly tap into this mantra helps me bunches.
    All best

Oooh, nice. I like that. Thanks for sharing. Yes, so helpful in so many areas. :)

I like your post. The only thing I’d add is that when Dr Hew Len talks about it, he’s clear that he doesn’t try to fix or change the thing in his reality, nor does he address the meditation directly to the person or thing in his reality that is problematic for him, he addresses it to the Divine.

The way he explains it, none of us have a direct connection to each other, but we are all connected to the Divine and through that level of consciousness are one and therefore connected to everything. Because of that, directing the meditation or energy at another person or situation at the manifest level doesn’t clean it from the collective consciousness/oneness where it emanates from, if that makes sense.

When he cleans, he makes his connection to the Divine and says he’s sorry for whatever it is that’s shown up in his reality and that he doesn’t know what in him has created it. Then he asks the Divine to clean or erase whatever issue or vibration in him and therefore in the subconscious/collective consciousness has created it, all the way back to the beginning of time if necessary (forgive). Then he thanks the Divine and says I love you. :-)

It’s that subconscious something, that could have been created any time in our history all the way back to us being an amoeba (his words :-) ), that we hold in us that makes us 100% responsible for every reflection of it that we find in our outer world. Knowing that, for me, helps me recognise that I am responsible for everything in that I can use the outer world as a reflection and do something to serve all life by “cleaning on it”, rather than feeling guilt or blame for having it as I sometimes see people do when they hear that 100% responsible thing.

I loved hearing him talk about it and find this technique SO inspiring. Thank you for the reminder of it. So simple and so powerful.

  10. Terri says:

Thanks for the insights, Natalie. That makes a lot of sense. I like that perspective of just clearing up your own connection. It’s very freeing.

  11. Vibrational Energy says:

I like your website, the style is neat and really easy to follow. Did you buy a theme you found on a site or get it custom made?

  12. Terri says:

Thanks! It was just a wordpress theme, but I’ve recently had a designer playing around with it. So it’s no longer exactly the way the theme was in the beginning. :)

  13. Natalie says:

Have you seen this post and video? Joe Vitale explains it brilliantly.

John Marvin!!! I was thinking about you not long ago, wondering how you are doing. So nice to hear from you. Thanks so much for your delightful comment. How are YOU?

About three years ago Dr. Emoto (Miraculous Messages of Water) came through Olympia. He led a public ceremony at the Artesian Well. We all sang our gratitude to the beautiful water and he also led us in offering the ho’oponopono.
In the early summer this year I went to the ocean at a very low tide hoping to harvest seaweed. I found a place with a lot of seaweed and asked for permission to harvest and it told me no, that it had a job to do. I remembered that some seaweed has the ability to pull radiation form bodies and intuited that was whet it was doing in the ocean. Instead of harvesting I spent a few hours offering the ho’oponopono to the Pacific ocean.
This is perhaps less personal a use for this blessing, but I think not since all our bodies are largely water and it’s all one water.

    ” Ventilate” emotions

Allow yourself to talk and ” ventilate” emotions, it is important to talk about concerns when we feel stress and pressure .When you understand the value of ” ventilate” emotions, you will know how to react to others which are in a state of stress, for example:
Stressed people usually want to repeat things already said again and again, it is important to listen to them.

I took an IZI training this past weekend, and I asked specifically about saying “I’m sorry, please forgive me”. i was told that it is not necessary, its meaning is encapsulated in the responsibility taken when stating the phrases “I love you” and “thank you”.
